An Ubud Villa Holiday is easily one of the most calming, rejuvenating and enchanting experiences that you and your family or friends could enjoy on your next getaway together.
Ubud is located inland, in the middle of the Balinese rainforest and is a wonderfully spiritual area that gained worldwide fame in 2010 when it featured in the movie Eat, Pray, Love.
5 Star Villa Holidays have been to Ubud a number of times actually and we are excited to be able to give you a little insight into how to make the most of this magical part of the world.
All the best,
Helena Doyle

Some might describe Ubud as the literal heart of the Earth when it comes to Yoga. You would be hard pressed to come across such a high density of incredible quality yoga studios anywhere else on the globe. The area has become extremely magnetic to those who wish to practice, teach or train in the art of Yoga and there is certainly a peaceful and loving energy flowing through the streets of Ubud due to this, in addition to the beautiful and friendly local Balinese culture of course. Yoga studios you might like to try when you are looking to embrace a little zen for yourself are:
Just like many other popular areas in Bali, Ubud is a veritable force when it comes to creating massage and spa spaces and treatments that promote the utmost in relaxation and indulgence to all who visit. Treat yourself to a traditional Balinese massage at any one of the below recommended spas, or delight in one of the incredible beauty treatments at Fresh! Many of our Ubud Villas also provide in-house massage services if you fancy treating yourself without the hassle of having to set foot out the door!
If you haven't already dropped into a state of pure bliss with all the yoga, massages and spa treatments, the incredibly vast number and variety of delicious dining options in Ubud will certainly get you there. The streets of Ubud are peppered with world class restaurants and cafes, and it would not be a true experience of this spiritual centre if you didn't dine at at least one of the many delicious vegan and vegetarian options! Restaurants and cafes that we personally recommend:
We also recommend taking one of the fantastic cooking classes on offer in Ubud. A true local experience; many offer the opportunity to tour through the food markets where ingredients are purchased and then in a group setting you prepare several authentic Indonesian dishes from scratch, usually in the teachers' palace-like home! (If you aren't the most confident chef, don't worry – you will be provided with plenty of instruction and assistance along the way). After the hard work is done you get to sit down to an absolutely delicious and well-deserved feast packed full of local flavours. This is a great experience and you are guaranteed an incredible lunch – win-win!
The Tegalalang Rice Terraces are located just outside the Ubud Centre and photos of these stunningly dramatic, vibrant green terraces steeping down into the enormous valley below have been revered all across the world for decades. Travellers, tourists, painters and nature lovers enjoy visiting this spot and there are numerous art kiosks and cafes near the roadside leading into the valley where you can purchase a little piece of paradise for yourself. We recommend rising early and being at the terraces for sunrise – beat the crowds and take in the unique beauty of this landscape in those magical first rays of the day
There are so many ancient, intricate and sacred temples both in the heart of Ubud and in the surrounding rainforest areas and smaller villages nearby. No trip to this cultural and spiritual hub is complete without visiting at least one of these beautiful manifestations of the local Hindu religion. Do a little research, find the one that speaks most to your soul and head off on a beautiful little adventure from your Ubud Villa to one of these fascinating temples:
Ubud's Monkey Forest is a unique experience not to be missed! The sanctuary is home to over 700 Balinese long-tailed monkeys, all of whom are free to roam the forest and ancient temple structures as they please, alongside the many human visitors they get to interact with every day. The site is well-preserved thanks to a community-based management program.
After paying a small entrance fee, you are welcome to wander and watch the playful monkeys in their natural habitat as you walk along cool paved pathways through a leafy nutmeg forest. Many tourists will buy a banana and encourage the monkeys to climb up their bodies to retrieve the delectable treat!
Just be careful to remove all jewellery and keep your bags closed tightly when interacting with these cheeky little mischief makers! They have learned a thing or two and have sticky fingers when it comes to their human guests.
The Ubud market is an enlivened hub of activity and beautiful, handmade wares are on offer at every turn for a great price if you have your bartering techniques fine-tuned!
There are also countless lovely boutiques peppered along the streets. Why not spend an afternoon roaming in and out of stores taking in the fantastic clothing, jewellery, homewares, gemstones, paintings, handbags, shoes and so much more that are on offer. You are sure to find more than one piece that you will fall in love with and simply have to bring back home with you. Many of these stores sell locally made products and the always-smiling business owners and shop assistants would love to help you find the perfect souvenir.
Ubud is widely revered as the artistic capital of Bali and is where many galleries and stores in other regions of the island source their paintings, wood carvings, jewellery and various other wares. You can take tours of many of the fascinating studios and workshops of these talented craftspeople, and several makers even offer classes in painting, silversmithing, weaving, batik and wood-carving. Why not spend half a day letting your creative juices flow in one of the many classes on offer. You are sure to have a lovely time, learn some new skills and will connect with one of the local artists in the process. Some of the art galleries we recommend visiting include:
The waterfalls around Ubud's centre are well known and there are several to choose from for a half day or day of appreciating the incredible natural terrain at the heart of beautiful Bali. We recommend hiring a driver to take you and your family/friends from your private Ubud Villa to any of these enchanting waterfalls nearby:
There are nightly shows all over Ubud of the 'Kecak' fire dance, which is arguably the most famous of all the traditional Balinese dances. In Bali, a traditional dance is more than just artistic expression, it is a spiritual practice to show gratitude to the gods for their blessings and kindness.
The Kecak Dance tells the story of the epic poem Ramayana; it's about Rama, the king of Ayodhya, who was sent into exile. Sita, his loyal wife, and his brother, Laksamana, insisted on following him into the forest. The plot only thickens from here and dance performances are truly an engaging, dramatic and enthralling sight to behold, especially alongside the unique Balinese music.
There is sure to be a performance nearby your Ubud Villa, we recommend asking your villa butler for advice on the best spot to experience this memorable performance.
