Why choose Byron Bay?

The first to find sanctuary on this beautiful shoreline were the Bundjalung people, later surfers then hippies. Today, Byron Bay is one of Australia's top beach resorts. Its dazzling coastline is a feast of picture-perfect beaches, lush hills and valleys, inhabited by creatives and free-thinkers who give the place its irresistible cool.

Bordering the coast, the undulating landscape of the hinterland is carpeted in a fascinating patchwork of: lush ancient rainforest and waterfalls, fields of sugar cane, macadamia nuts, bananas and coffee, farmland and tiny villages, volcanoes and lagoons. It's a remarkable blend that leaves plenty to uncover.

Below, phenomenal stretches of sand, edged by jewel-blue waters, home to dolphins and humpback whales, are the ideal place to relax. Whether by day or a stroll in the morning, you'll soon find yourself taking in some of the many artistic, foodie, wellbeing or adventure experiences located throughout the town.

From yoga to food tours, galleries and watersports, there's so much to do here and it's all centred around wellbeing. Hippie roots means nothing's bland in Byron.

You'll enjoy sublime views from every angle, paired with a warm welcome and laid-back vibe. The luxury villas to rent in Byron Bay are legendary so you'll find lots of choice that stuns.

As popular with families as with backpackers and older returners, Byron Bay has something for everyone.

You'll relish fresh produce turned into delicious goods by artisan producers alongside a wide range of memorable landmarks, lots of great shopping in fascinating stores, top surf, all sorts of nature experiences and plenty of fun for all ages. It's a thrilling destination you'll want to come back to.

Best things to do in Byron Bay

Its diverse landscape, year-round sun and dynamic population ensures Byron Bay is packed with all sorts of interesting things to do. From top attractions to must-see sights, here's our picks of the best things to do in Byron Bay.

Best things to do in Byron Bay:

Best beaches:

Byron Bay first became famous for its surf so you'll want to check out its best beaches for surfing. As you would expect, there are surf schools available on lots of beaches so be sure to catch a lesson or two if you're a novice.

There are of course, lots of other watersports available in addition to surfing and horse-riding on the beach is a must.

For surfing:

For beginners, Clarke's Beach is a favourite. You'll appreciate Clarkes Beach's gentle surf which also makes it ideal for paddle boarders. During winter, you'll want to head elsewhere as strong winds can make Clarke's dangerous.

Experienced surfers love the challenges and variety found in the surf at Broken Head Beach. If you visit on weekdays, you'll pretty much have Broken Head's sought-after surf breaks and swells to yourself.

For those looking for something in the middle, The Wreck at Belongil Beach ticks every box. The sandbank clustered over a 1922 shipwreck makes The Wreck a unique and memorable place to surf, with awesome waves breaking left and right.

Whites Beach For relaxation:

If you want the most idyllic beach retreat in Byron Bay, Whites Beach could be it. Whites Beach is an award-winning, remote beach where locals like to hang and surf, yet its hidden location means it remains quiet. Tucked away below a dirt road with a steep walk down to the shore, you'll pass through light rainforest and somewhat rocky hillside before arriving at Whites tranquil stretch of beautiful coastline.

Wategos Beach

For serenity that's easier to access, head to Wategos Beach or if the tide's right, its tiny next-door cove, Little Wategos. Located by Cape Byron Lighthouse, you'll uncover a sublime small beach with space to picnic or barbecue. The curved shoreline creates sheltered sands with calm waters. You may even spot a bottlenose dolphin or two surfing the waves.

Little Wategos is found at the bottom of cliffside steps and Cape Byron Lighthouse is situated at the end of the beach. Wategos' premier location means you'll need to pay a few dollars per hour to park in what is a small car park. You may have to endure a short wait for the space but it's worth it.

Belongil Beach

Belongil Beach is a long beach that's popular with all ages, particularly families. It has toilets nearby, lifeguards at the southern end and Belongil Creek at the other. Swimmers and families stick to the south side of the beach whilst surfers and divers are located around The Wreck. If you get there at dawn, Belongil is the perfect place to see a phenomenal Bay sunrise.

Torakina Beach's

For the most picturesque location, Torakina Beach's position in the mouth of Brunswick River delivers cracking, lush green vistas in every direction. Next door, Torakina Park has all the facilities you need for picnics and toilet breaks whilst pretty calm waters mean Torakina is also a hit with families.

Clarkes Beach

The relaxed waves at Clarkes Beach make it a top choice for swimmers and snorkellers. You can have a chilled swim whilst at the end of the beach favoured by surfers, you'll find Fisherman's Lookout which delivers great views across the coast and out to sea.

Main Beach

Positioned opposite the centre of town, Main Beach is a popular place to chill, with lots to do around the shore and great surf. Its sands are bordered by a park with good facilities for picnics as well as restaurants and attractions. With so much to do in and around the area, Main Beach is always busy with people playing and catching up.

Best local attractions:

And that's just the beginning. There's lots more to do and see in Byron Bay beyond its superb beaches.

Cape Byron: Attractions on the water in Byron Bay

The tall white tower of Cape Byron Lighthouse is Byron Bay's iconic landmark. Positioned on Australia's most easterly point, Cape Byron Lighthouse is a magical place to watch the sun rise or spot humpback whales and dolphins at play.

It's no surprise this headland was a sacred place for the Bundjalung people. Built in the 19th century, you'll can see far out to sea and across the hinterland from here. There are also a collection of things to see inside the lighthouse.

Humpback whales Tours

Get out onto the water by boat to see the humpback whales on a whale watching tour. If you're visiting between May and October, you'll be able to catch their magnificent migration north. During your tour, you'll also have a chance to view the dolphins, sea turtles and birds which inhabit the Cape.

kayaking tour

If you want to get closer to the dolphins, join a kayaking tour which will take you around the Cape to see dolphins, turtles and possibly even whales from lower down. You'll also learn more about the history of the area and get to look at the lighthouse from another angle.

Cape Byron Marine Park

Go diving amongst the two islands that make up Julian Rocks off the coast of Byron Bay. Part of the Cape Byron Marine Park, you'll relish the 9 impressive sites for snorkelling and diving which lie in these waters. The area is a unique mixture of tropical warm currents and cooler waters, enabling you to swim amongst both tropical marine life and those from the Southern Ocean and Great Barrier Reef.

The Hinterland: Natural attractions in Byron Bay

Uncover a different side of Byron Bay by traveling into the hinterland. The fertile area known as the hinterland is marked by sacred Wollumbin, the historic volcano whose eruption 20 million years ago created this beautiful region.

The volcano (also known as Mt. Warning) is sacred and the highest point in Byron Bay. You can't climb it but you can get closer to view it from Border Ranges National Park. Border Ranges National Park is a World Heritage sub-tropical rainforest which sits below Wollumbin. As you journey through one of the park' trails on foot, bike or by car, you'll discover the fascinating plants, flowers and animals which inhabit this unspoilt ancient rainforest.

Pinnacle Walk

You may even choose to spend a night under the stars at one of the many campsites located within the park. The Pinnacle Walk is a great place from which to see Wollumbin, the crater escarpment and Tweed Valley. On a clear day, you can see all the way out to the coast. Get to the viewing point early enough and you'll be able to witness a sensational sunrise.

Nightcap National Park

Nightcap National Park is another part of the same enormous ancient rainforest called the Gondwana Rainforest. Here you'll find striking waterfalls, pools and crystal-clear creeks hidden amongst the plants and animals.

Minyon Falls is Nightcap National Park's most famous waterfall. It has a spectacular 100m drop, finishing in a refreshingly cool pool, where you'll enjoy taking a dip. The lookout point at the top of Minyon Falls has the best all-encompassing view in Byron Bay.

In the inhabited areas of the hinterland, take a craft brewery tour, a wine tour or a food tour to sample some of the delicious fresh food grown in the local area. Enroute, stop at one of the many charming villages, pubs or galleries and meet some of the friendly locals. You'll also find glorious yoga retreats and spas in the hills.

Nimbin

Experience the essence of the spirit which fostered the modern re-awakening of Byron Bay at Nimbin. This area is of importance to the Bundjalung people and one part of the larger Rainbow Region.

Nimbin still functions through the ethos of the hippies who made it their home in the 70s. It remains a hub of community, activism, festivals and creativity. From yoga to protests, art exhibitions, poetry, artisan crafts and farmers' markets, you'll find a packed calendar of festivals, weekly events, markets, exhibitions and more.

Family Fun:

Byron is famous for its impressive quality and range of fresh local produce. Its producers are passionate about what they do and many local farms have restaurants and farm shops where you can sample tasty, fresh goods - some also do tours.

The Farm in Ewingsdale ensures it has plenty to offer families and you can easily spend many hours here. The community farm has a large children's playground alongside its shop, brewery, bakery and restaurant. You can explore the entire site as a family and see a working eco farm in action. During the holidays there all sorts of interactive workshops about eco farms and sustainability.

Circus Arts Byron

Circus Arts Byron is another popular place for families and it's particularly handy because it's indoors. Inside, there are all sorts of circus themed activities to try, such as flying trapeze, tumble tracks and jumping castles. In the holidays, Circus Arts also put on workshops for children of all ages.

Crystal Castle's

Children love the shimmering glints in any crystals so you can bet, they'll be amazed at the giant crystals which are part of the collection at Crystal Castle.

Crystal Castle's huge collection of natural crystals come from all over the globe. The 5.5m high Enchanted Cave is the world's largest amethyst cave that's guaranteed to impress kids with its zillions of crystals. Other highlights include the subtropical Shambhala Gardens bursting with beautiful botanicals, stone sculptures, a children's playground and two of the tallest crystals on earth.
