The dynamic blend of old and new, coupled with the significance of the city as an important part of Australian history, means Melbourne has something for everyone. Outside the city centre, there's plenty of nature to explore and exciting nearby wildlife to uncover.
Whether you're travelling as a group of family, you'll find there's plenty to keep everyone entertained plus lots of gorgeous luxury villas to rent too.
Its diverse landscape, year-round sun and dynamic population ensures Melbourne is packed with all sorts of interesting things to do. From top attractions to must-see sights, here's our picks of the best things to do in Melbourne.
In the city centre: Melbourne is a great city to explore on foot and a stroll along the Southbank beside the River Yarra will give you a lovely view of the city. You'll find everything from shops to bars, restaurants, clubs, live entertainment and theatres along this stretch.
Dine by the river, have fun at the amusement park and make sure to stop off at the Eureka Tower. At 300m high, the Eureka Skydeck on the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower, delivers panoramic views of the city that are unmatched. A boat cruise along the Yarra River is another great way to see Melbourne at its best.
From Melbourne's wide choice of museums and galleries, five not to be missed are: the Melbourne Museum, Koorie Heritage Trust, the National Sport Museum, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Immigration Museum.
The National Gallery of Victoria is the oldest and busiest public art gallery in Australia. It houses over 70,000 artworks from around the world. Its most famous exhibit is arguably the stained glass ceiling of The Great Hall. Another notable find is the Ian Potter Collection which features Australian artworks from Aboriginal pieces right through to today.
The Ian Potter Collection is located in Federation Square which houses a number of other museums and galleries, as well as event spaces and eateries.
The Koorie Heritage Trust is also here. The Koorie charts the history of the Koorie people who originally came from Victoria and other parts of New South Wales. Over at the legendary Melbourne Cricket Ground, you'll find the National Sport Museum which includes an Olympic Museum and Australian Gallery of Sport.
The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria are another top attraction. The Royal Botanic is over 170 years old with more than 8,500 species of plants from around the world to see. The Gardens are spread over two sites where you can uncover different types of botanicals.
At Melbourne Gardens there are 31 collections, celebrating plants from around the world, including everything from rainforest flora to Californian plants and fauna from Southern China.
Younger members of the group, will relish the range of brilliant play spaces in the award-winning Children's Garden, which includes wetlands, a bamboo garden and rainforest vegetation. Meanwhile, the Wellbeing Garden and Aboriginal Heritage Walk are popular with adults. Over at Cranbourne Gardens, the focus is on Australian bushland. There are 10km walking trails, 6km of cycling tracks, a playground and plenty of other interesting spaces to discover.
Take a boat cruise around Philip Island to see some of its magnificent landscape and marine wildlife. Seals, dolphins and whales all inhabit the waters. Inland, there are numerous ways to get close to the island's koalas, kangaroos and more.
Whilst you drink in Philip Island's beautiful coastline, don't forget to catch the penguin parade as the island's 32,000 penguins return home from a day's fishing.
A drive along the famous Great Ocean Road is a good way to see a number of famous landmarks which lie along the coast. With the sea on one side and land on the other, you'll be able to take in: the ancient limestone structures of the Twelve Apostles out at sea, Great Otway National Park, Cape Otway, Erskine Falls, Port Campbell National Park and more.
Along the route, you'll uncover a huge choice of attractions, ranging from hot springs to bush tours, wildlife parks, tasty restaurants and craft breweries. The Great Ocean Road is one of the most picturesque routes in the world so it's not to be missed.
Another iconic location is the Esplanade at St Kilda. The pretty seaside town is favoured for its great combination of beautiful beaches, historic buildings, eateries and nightlife - you might even see some local penguins on the rocks by the water's edge.
Don't leave without hopping on a wine tour in the world-famous Yarra Valley region. Fine sparkling wine, chardonnay, pinot noir, pinot grigio and brachetto are all grown in the region. Many vineyards also include a top notch restaurant where you can enjoy both great wine and food.
Melbourne's foodie scene is an intoxicating mix of different cultural cuisines, using lots of fresh local produce, served up in a relaxed, youthful environment. That means you can look forward to exciting, innovative dishes which break all the rules without compromising on quality.
If you're a Masterchef Australia fan you might want to pay a visit to one of George Calombaris' restaurants, such as Gazi which serves up delicious Greek dishes. Bar Lourinha is another landmark Melbourne restaurant delivering superb Mediterranean dishes in trendy surroundings. Anchovy is a fascinating Asian Vietnamese fusion restaurant whilst Italian at Di Stasio Citta and contemporary Chinese at Lee Ho Fook are too good to miss.
Whether you want to be by the water's edge, in the heart of things, close to parkland or in the suburbs, you'll find a superb choice of stunning luxury villas, perfect for families and groups of all sizes.

In 2005, John Paul Donnelly, began his luxury villa journey. He spent three years building resorts and holiday apartments in Alanya, Turkey, along with his brother, Joe. The concept was to create the most luxurious villas on the Turkish coastline and provide clients, along with their family and friends, the opportunity to enjoy exclusive holidays together.
By 2008, after the successful development of 3 resorts, JP had well and truly fallen into the world of villa rentals. With a portfolio of 6 villas and a desire to explore new places, he decided it was time to take the villa rental business outside of Turkey. He wanted to give his clients access to beautiful holiday rentals in destinations across the globe.
The expanding villa rental company was rebranded in 2011 to 5 Star Villa Holidays, and today 5 Star Villa Holidays offers over 10,000 luxury villas around the world.
JP and his partner, Helena are currently travelling the globe, devoted to hand selecting the best villas and property management companies, and giving them their stamp of approval! 5 Star Villa Holidays' ambition goes beyond being an ordinary holiday rental company.
