Why choose Rhodes?

Rhodes' mountainous landscape is thick with forests of pine, cypress, olive, citrus, fig and pomegranate trees with a colourful tapestry of wildflowers below. In between, rivers, waterfalls, whitewashed villages, Byzantine churches and ancient ruins make for a spectacular backdrop to the rugged cliffs and beautiful coastline.

The best beaches on the isle are positioned along Rhodes' east coast. Carefully maintained crystal-clear waters topped by long stretches of sand or shingle beach plus plenty of quiet bays are some of the finest shores you'll find in Greece.

Enjoy watersports and excellent facilities on the beach or relax on one of the many golf courses scattered across the land. For more active pursuits as you explore the isle, horse-riding, mountain-biking, hiking and nature trails are all easily available and a great way to uncover Rhodes' pretty terrain.

For history there are archaeological sites, historic castles, ancient monasteries, striking ancient ruins, Venetian fortresses and more. When night falls, lively tavernas, bars and clubs are on hand to keep you busy if you wish. Whichever you choose, there are a stunning range of luxury villas to return home to at night.

Hop on a boat for the 20km crossing to Turkey or take a boat tour along the waters that surround. With some of the best wind surfing in Europe plus thrilling sights, including the Temple of Athena, Acropolis of Rhodes and one of the best examples of a medieval walled city to see, Rhodes is a treasure trove of unique experiences wherever you turn.

Best things to do in Rhodes

From stunning coastline to dazzling historical sites and magnificent treks into nature, there is lots to do and see in Rhodes. Here's our top picks of the best things to do and see in Rhodes.

Best things to do in Rhodes:

Best beaches:

Rhodes's beautiful clear waters and well-kept beaches are perfect for all types of travellers. Long banks of sand and great facilities are easily found whilst quiet coves almost hidden from sight, are plentiful. Here's our favourites from Rhodes' best beaches.

Top beaches for families include Tsambika Beach, Ixia Beach and Lindos Beach. Lindos is a gorgeous stretch of coastline with shallow waters, topped by Lindos Castle. There's lots to do and see in the area plus plenty of restaurants so it's a great place to spend the day.

Tsambika Beach

Tsambika Beach is a stunning setting with green hills behind, a pretty bay ahead and a striking monastery at the top of its shores. Down below, you'll find watersports on the beach and lots of bars and restaurants on its borders making it an ideal choice for groups and families. If you don't mind a pebbly beach, Ixia Beach offers a similar experience with cracking scenery and lots to do.

St Paul's Bay

If you're willing to make the lengthy descent, St Paul's Bay is a picturesque spot with stunning views. It does get busy so arrive early to bag the best space.

Anthony Quinn Beach

Another one for the adults is Anthony Quinn Beach. This beautiful inlet has piercing blue waters, edged by a rocky, hilly enclave pretty with pine trees and foliage. However it's handy to kno in advance that Anthony Quinn's pebble-sand beach is often frequented by nudists so you're not too shocked when relaxing on the beach.

Prasonisi Beach

For something a little different, head to Prasonisi Beach but make sure you arrive at the right time! Prasonisi Beach is only visible at low tide. For the rest of the time, it looks like an island because the sand is partially covered by water. The beach is surrounded by mountains with lots of restaurants on its borders, shallow waters and dazzling views out to sea.

Kalithea Beach

Alternatively, Kalithea Beach has hot springs and masterful architecture hidden amongst the pines and palms that surround its shores. Kalithea Springs were once a place where people bathed to find healing from ailments during ancient times and its pretty Moorish pavilion and pergolas are often used for events today.

Popular with travellers of all ages, Kalithea is a fascinating piece of coastline with stunning scenery, a beautiful beach, excellent facilities and great spots for diving.

Best local attractions:

When exploring all that Rhodes has to offer, a visit to Rhodes Old Town has to be top of the list. Rhodes' medieval Old Town is one of the most well-preserved fortified cities in the world. Inhabited by crusading knights, Venetians, Ottoman Turks, Italians and more, this distinguished town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site you won't want to miss.

Resplendent architecture, cobbled streets, a magnificent city wall and tons of tiny alleyways are ripe for discovery. From gothic archways to elegant Italian-style courtyards, ancient churches and medieval buildings that were once places of rest for the Knights of St John, there is plenty to do and see inside and on its borders.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

Not to be missed is the 14th century Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Built by the Knights of St John, the town's crowning structure was constructed in the place where the ancient temple of Helios, God of the Sun, once stood.

The palace's huge structure was a great feat for its time with 158 rooms and spherical towers. Inside, there are rooms to tour furnished with expensive artefacts from the 16th and 17th century plus frescoes, statues, mosaics and more.

Lindos Acropolis

Perched high on a cliff overlooking the sea, the Lindos Acropolis is a fortified city that's been repurposed by every group of new inhabitants to the island. The result is a fascinating place where you can enjoy stunning views out to sea alongside a collection of magnificent ruins spanning many centuries and civilisations.

Notable sights include the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, the Byzantine Church of St John, an ancient amphitheatre and the 14th century castle of the Knights of St John.

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

For more history and a full explanation of all, check out the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes in Rhodes Town. In the hills and valleys that surround, you'll find many more phenomenal castles, churches and monasteries, each a remnant left by the island's many conquering nations.

Petaloudes Valley

There are lots of charming nature trails you can take to explore Rhodes' pretty terrain. One of the favourite's is a hike through the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes Valley). If you arrive between June and August, this wonderful route will take you through an idyllic nature reserve, rich with waterfalls, wildflowers, greenery, bridges, ponds and lots of butterflies.

Located in Europe's only natural Oriental Sweetgum forest, you''ll see all sorts of rare and colourful butterflies nesting around tree trunks if they're asleep or overhead in a cloud if awake.

Symi Island

On water, take a trip out to tranquil Symi Island where you'll find serene beaches, the 18th century Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis and the pretty, pastel-coloured, neo-classical architecture of Symi Old Town.

Sample tasty, fresh seafood in the quaint harbour, go diving in the clear waters or take a hike inland to uncover its lush terrain littered with tiny villages and chapels. If you make it to the top, you'll be rewarded with phenomenal views across the isle and out to sea.

Best restaurants:

Wherever you go in Rhodes, it's easy to find a friendly taverna or restaurant serving tasty Greek classics, including: handmade kebabs, stews, seafood, meat dishes, homemade pasta, meze and refreshing salads. If you do want international cuisine, it's readily available across the island.

Our Story

In 2005, John Paul Donnelly, began his luxury villa journey. He spent three years building resorts and holiday apartments in Alanya, Turkey, along with his brother, Joe. The concept was to create the most luxurious villas on the Turkish coastline and provide clients, along with their family and friends, the opportunity to enjoy exclusive holidays together.

By 2008, after the successful development of 3 resorts, JP had well and truly fallen into the world of villa rentals. With a portfolio of 6 villas and a desire to explore new places, he decided it was time to take the villa rental business outside of Turkey. He wanted to give his clients access to beautiful holiday rentals in destinations across the globe.

The expanding villa rental company was rebranded in 2011 to 5 Star Villa Holidays, and today 5 Star Villa Holidays offers over 10,000 luxury villas around the world.

JP and his partner, Helena are currently travelling the globe, devoted to hand selecting the best villas and property management companies, and giving them their stamp of approval! 5 Star Villa Holidays' ambition goes beyond being an ordinary holiday rental company. It is a marketplace for luxurious and exclusive villas around the world.
