Once a quiet fishing village, Calpe is now a popular, yet still small and relaxing Spanish retreat on the east coast of Spain. Located on the infamous Costa Blanca, Calpe is a coastal haven bordered by mountains, hills and vineyards.
Not far from Benidorm and Alicante, Calpe has some of the best coastline in the region.
From its many blue flag, sandy beaches to its easy-going pace, historic ruins, luxury villas
Besides its stunning shoreline, Calpe is known for its delicious seafood so you'll find plenty of sumptuous seafood restaurants dotted all over the town and along the marina.
For things to do, there are ancient ruins from the Moors and Romans to explore, as well as museums, golf courses, watersports, natural phenomena, rock climbing, sailing and nightclubs to enjoy.
Whether you want to relax, get active or explore, Calpe has something to keep everyone fully entertained all holiday.
From blue flag beaches to beachside restaurants, hideaway coves, water parks, boat tours, Moorish castles and Roman villas, Calpe has lots of things to do and see. Here's our top picks of the best things to do and see in Calpe.
Best beaches:
Calpe's infamous yet quiet coastline offers beautiful, blue flag beaches topped by clear waters and home to a rich variety of marine life. Most beaches are accompanied by beachside bars, restaurants or cafes and children's play areas.
There are lots of top beaches to choose from in Calpe, some of our favourites include:
For a dazzling, picturesque location, head to Cala El Raco cove. Hidden away at the foot of the Penon de Ifach, its transparent waters are a favourite with divers and home to the Princesa de Asturias Ecology Walk. Cala La Calalga Beach is another popular cove for uncovering the rich marine life that inhabit these waters
For families, the Playa de la Fossa is a popular choice with lots of shops and restaurants nearby, as well as the striking Rock of Ifach towering overhead. Other top choices for families include Playa de Cantal Roig Beach and Playa Del Arenal Bol.
For something a little different, head to Cala Manzanera or Cala Del Morello. Cala Del Morello is a fascinating stretch of shoreline dotted with ruins from Ancient Rome, offering a unique opportunity to paddle in waters with the remains of Roman thermal baths beside you.
Beyond Calpe's beaches there are plenty of historical sights, sports of every kind and family attractions to enjoy.
For the best water park in the area, take a trip to Aqualandia in nearby Benidorm. Aqualandia is the biggest water park in Costa Blanca with a wide range of exhilarating slides, lagoons, caves and pools to keep everyone entertained.
The town's historic old quarter has Iberian, Roman and Arab ruins amongst its shops, markets and restaurants. From the old town walls to the region's last Mudejar Gothic building, remnants of a Roman villa, the Moorish Castle of Calpe and a number of museums, there is lots to see in town without going far.
Hike up the Penon de Ifach in Parque Natural de Penyal D'Ifach. The park surrounds the 332m limestone rock that sticks out of the bay - the Penon de Ifach.
Penon de Ifach is Calpe's biggest landmark. You'll find the ascent gets particularly tricky towards the top but if you make it, the views from Penon de Ifach are spectacular.
This striking rocky outcrop and its park below, Parque Natural de Penyal D'Ifach, are a nature reserve. Together, the park and rock are home to many flowers, plants, birds, reptiles, rabbits and hedgehogs. A number of the park's botanicals are rare species that become more alpine in behaviour as you travel higher up the rock.
Take a walking trail through Las Salinas de Calpe nature reserve. These natural salt flats were in frequent use throughout previous centuries for their abundance of salt. Now a beautiful natural reserve, you can stroll through the lagoon and admire the rich range of flowers, plants and wildlife that inhabit the area, including migratory birds, such as flamingos who make a stop enroute to Africa.
Hike or cycle along the Sendero Voramar Calalga O Bassetes coastal path. This picturesque walking trail is dotted with ecological parks, coves, unspoilt bays and stunning views across the coast.
For another popular family day out, head to nearby Safari Aitana, the only drive through safari park in the region, with an enormous range of animals from all five continents of the world, including big cats, giraffes, elephants and more.
Once a fishing village, Calpe is still famous for its seafood. Some of the best restaurants in Calpe include: The Calpe Vineyard, Beat, Restaurante Puerto Blanco, Orobianco Ristorante, El Posit, Patio de la Fuente, Tavino.
If you do feel like indulging in some pulsating Spanish nightlife, you'll need to head over to nearby Benidorm where you'll find a vibrant clubbing centre, considered amongst the best in Europe.

In 2005, John Paul Donnelly, began his luxury villa journey. He spent three years building resorts and holiday apartments in Alanya, Turkey, along with his brother, Joe. The concept was to create the most luxurious villas on the Turkish coastline and provide clients, along with their family and friends, the opportunity to enjoy exclusive holidays together.
By 2008, after the successful development of 3 resorts, JP had well and truly fallen into the world of villa rentals. With a portfolio of 6 villas and a desire to explore new places, he decided it was time to take the villa rental business outside of Turkey. He wanted to give his clients access to beautiful holiday rentals in destinations across the globe.
The expanding villa rental company was rebranded in 2011 to 5 Star Villa Holidays, and today 5 Star Villa Holidays offers over 10,000 luxury villas around the world.
